Libertarian Party Values

The Libertarian approach to government is quite simple: every person has a natural right to life, liberty, property and the pursuit of happiness, and it is government's obligation to protect these rights. Government has no rights and can confer no rights. This means government is delegated only a responsibility for our national defense (to prevent other countries from violating our rights), for a criminal justice system (to prevent our fellow citizens from violating other citizens' rights) and for very limited functions to support the general welfare of all citizens equally.

Government is not charged with providing for our education, our transportation, our personal self-defense, our morals, or individual habits, our likes and dislikes, our hiring practices, our business ethics, etc. It is not supposed to tell us what we may or may not read, watch or prefer. It cannot stop our right to free assembly, nor to free association.

We believe the individual human being is sovereign in his/her own body and that no one, including and especially government, has a right to prevent any adult from eating, drinking, smoking, or injecting anything he/she wishes to or having any kind of medical treatment, adornment, etc. he/she wants.
